Conversations about Suicide

The 4-hour MHFA Conversations about Suicide course is for any interested adult. Participants will learn the skills and acquire the knowledge required to safely have a conversation with a suicidal person. 

At the completion of the course participants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to safely have a conversation with a suicidal person. This is not a postvention course and is not recommended for individuals recently bereaved by suicide.

The MHFA Conversations about Suicide course is not a therapy or a support group and it is important that people undertaking the course are feeling relatively robust when they undertake it. 

The course will teach you how to:

  • Identify warning signs for suicide
  • Have a conversation with someone experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Confidently support a person in crisis

Conversations about Non-Suicidal Self-injury (deliberate self-harm)

The 4-hour MHFA Conversations about Non-Suicidal Self-Injury course is for any interested adult.  Participants will learn how to assist a person who is engaging in self-injury.

At the completion of the course, participants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to help someone who is engaging in self-injury.


This is an education course, to learn how to give first aid to others, and is not a therapy or support group.

The course will teach you:

  • Why people engage in self-injury
  • How to talk to someone about their self-injury
  • How to help the person stay safe
  • How to connect someone to appropriate professional help
  • How to assess for suicidal thoughts and behaviours

Conversations About Gambling

The 4-hour MHFA Conversations about Gambling course is for any interested adult. Participants will learn how to identify, approach and support someone experiencing gambling harm using a practical, evidence-based action plan.

At the completion of the course, participants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to identify the risk factors, signs, symptoms and motivations of gambling problems, how to approach someone about their gambling problems, how relapse might affect someone with gambling problems, and how to manage your own self-care. You will also have the opportunity to practice your new skills in a safe environment.

This is an education course, to learn how to give first aid to others, and is not a therapy or support group.

This course will teach you:

  • How to approach someone about their gambling problems
  • The risk factors, signs and symptoms and motivations which may underpin gambling problems
  • How relapse might affect someone with gambling problems
  • How to manage your own self-care when helping someone with gambling problems

Ann was a great instructor with an enormous amount of experience and knowledge to share. She was very friendly, patient and delivered the content with passion and skill – it wasn’t a boring textbook style teaching experience. An invaluable training session.
