WHY WMHC

Welcome to Workplace Mental Health Consulting, specialising in facilitating mental health training and consulting with organisations to assist them develop and implement their mentally healthy workplace strategy.

Healthy workplaces promote mental health and wellbeing. They are positive and productive, and get the best out of everyone in the workplace. Businesses that care about good mental health and wellbeing attract and keep top talent because they’re great places to work. Therefore, a healthy workplace not only benefits employees, it is also better for your bottom line.

In any year, approximately one in five Australians experiences mental ill-health. Estimates for the cost of workplace absenteeism and presenteeism due to mental ill-health range from $13 billion each year up to $17 billion each year. This comprises $4.7 billion in absenteeism, $6.1 billion in presenteeism and $146 million in compensation claims. 21% of Australian employees report they have taken time off work due to feeling mentally unwell in the past twelve months. There is a growing focus on the role businesses can play in maintaining the mental health and well-being of their workforce – particularly the potential high returns to employers in terms of lowered absenteeism, increased productivity and reduced compensation claims from investing in strategies and program to create mentally healthy workplaces.

In addition, employers and PCBUs have a legal responsibility to manage physical and psychological hazards and risks in the workplace. Mental (psychological) health, just like physical health, is an important part of work health and safety (WHS). Recognising and managing risks in the workplace that may lead to physical or psychological injury is an essential part of creating a safe, healthy and productive workplace.

There are many benefits to having a mentally healthy workplace and these extend to workers, the business and the wider community. PWC have reported that through the implementation of an effective program to create a mentally healthy workplace, organisations can expect a positive return on investment (ROI) of 2.3. That is, for every dollar spent on implementing an appropriate action, there is on average $2.30 in benefits to be gained by the organisation.
